Granite is extremely durable, as well as water and stain resistant. Generally any liquid spilled onto a granite surface and wiped up within a few minutes will not leave a stain. Water left on a granite surface may leave a slight discolouration, but this will disappear once the water has evaporated. However, an oil based liquid, if left on a granite surface for a length of time, may cause a stain. The latter can in most cases be removed by a stone specialist.
Granite will not loose its shine over time, it is also very scratch and heat resistant. A routine cleaning with a mild soap and water is all that is required. Once a year a re-application of a penetrating sealer should be performed. This should take less than 15 min. It is also safe to cut meat and vegetables directly onto the granite surface, so if you are using your counter to prepare food, wipe it down with a mild anti-bacterial soap.
Granite is heat resistant and can withstand the heat of hot pots and pans without any damage to the surface.
Granites are composed of a variety of minerals, each with its own specific properties. The hardest mineral commonly found in granite is quartz, which can range in colour from translucent, white to grey.
Granite and marble are both natural stones that can be polished, but that is where their commonality ends. Marble is a calcium-based stone, in other words it was formed from oceanic deposits and then compressed under pressure. Granite on the other had is an igneous rock that was formed from molten magma that cooled and then hardened below the earth’s surface.
Granite falls into the category of a high-end luxury surfaces. Its value lies in its exceptional natural beauty, elegance and longevity.
