Our grandfather Bill loved a good turn of phrase, and was particularly fond of a quote by John Ruskin that began "When we build, let us think that we build forever." He and his father before him instilled in their sons and grandsons a lasting love and respect for the ancient craft of the stone mason.
A hundred years ago our great-grandfather James Andrew Clift built the Rhodes Memorial. It was his first contract as an independent granite building contractor, and marks the founding of what is today JA Clift (Pty) Ltd.
Today JA Clift (Pty) Ltd is the oldest surviving monumental and granite contracting business in South Africa, and in the words of John Ruskin we can truly say "See this our fathers did for us".
